{"id":402,"date":"2024-07-16T17:47:04","date_gmt":"2024-07-16T17:47:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/westmiddlesex.org\/?page_id=402"},"modified":"2024-07-16T17:47:04","modified_gmt":"2024-07-16T17:47:04","slug":"experiencing-homelessness","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/westmiddlesex.org\/index.php\/experiencing-homelessness\/","title":{"rendered":"Experiencing Homelessness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Pennsylvania&#8217;s Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness Program was established to make sure homeless youth have access to a free and appropriate public education while removing barriers that homeless children face.&nbsp;Its goal is to have the educational process continue as uninterrupted as possible while the children are in homeless situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 725(2) of the McKinney-Vento Act10 defines \u201chomeless children and youths\u201d as individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.&nbsp;The term includes \u2014<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Children and youths who are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason (sometimes referred to as \u201cdoubled-up\u201d);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to lack of alternative adequate accommodations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>living in emergency or transitional shelters; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>abandoned in hospitals;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Children and youths who have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Children and youths who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings; and&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7 Migratory children who qualify as homeless because they are living in circumstances described above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are aware of any children in the school district who may possibly fit the above criteria, please contact a school principal or the school district\u2019s homeless liaison, Scott McCaskey at 724-634-3030 or\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:smccaskey@westmiddlesex.org\">smccaskey@westmiddlesex.org<\/a>.\u00a0Services and support is available for these students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Homeless Liaison<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scott McCaskey724-634-3030 ext. 1127<br><a href=\"mailto:smccaskey@wmasd.k12.pa.us\">smccaskey@wmasd.k12.pa.us<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Links<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/0BwRryUg_dvz0d3A4WkN3TUVXeVE?resourcekey=0-o8LBUsmYkmJEdIo04c4u8g\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Homeless Education Documents<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pennsylvania&#8217;s Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness Program was established to make sure homeless youth have access to a free and appropriate public education while removing barriers that homeless children face.&nbsp;Its goal is to have the educational process continue as uninterrupted as possible while the children are in homeless situations.
